AI local visibility is significantly more difficult to achieve than ranking in Google local search. A 2026 report shows AI systems recommend far fewer businesses than Google Maps results. AI tools such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Perplexity display limited local business recommendations. Even highly ranked Google local listings often do not appear in AI responses.
The findings come from the 2026 Local Visibility Index published by SOCi. The study analyzed nearly 350,000 business locations across 2,751 multi-location brands. The data compared traditional Google local rankings with AI-generated recommendations.
AI Local Visibility Rates Across Platforms
AI local visibility varies by platform but remains consistently low. ChatGPT recommends only 1.2% of eligible business locations. Google Gemini recommends 11%. Perplexity recommends 7.4%. In contrast, 35.9% of businesses appear in Google’s local 3-pack.
This difference shows AI local visibility is between three and 30 times harder to achieve than Google local rankings. Many businesses visible on Google Maps are excluded from AI recommendations.
AI Local Visibility vs Google Local Rankings
The report highlights a clear gap between AI local visibility and traditional SEO performance. Fewer than 50% of top Google local brands also rank highly in AI-powered responses. In the retail sector, only 45% of leading Google local brands appear frequently in AI results.
In the restaurant category, visibility differs by brand. Some chains achieve higher AI recommendation rates when their data signals are stronger and more consistent.
Factors Influencing AI Local Visibility
AI systems rely on different signals than Google Maps. Review sentiment, average ratings, and data accuracy play a larger role. Businesses recommended by AI typically have higher review scores than those appearing only in traditional local search.
The report also notes data inconsistencies across AI platforms. Some business profiles contain outdated or incomplete information. Proximity and category relevance alone are no longer enough to secure AI local visibility.
AI recommendations depend on consistent business data, strong reputation signals, and clear differentiation across multiple sources.
